A new breed of Cougars will be taking the field this year for youth football games in and around the Upper Kanawha Valley and region.

Effective this season, the Campbells Creek Cougars and the Twin City Miners from Marmet have merged to form a single team, the Eastern Kanawha Cougars.

The Cougars’ team colors will be purple, black and silver, an homage to the hues of the Riverside High School Warriors, a possible eventual destination for the young players.

The Eastern Kanawha Cougars offers slots for players and cheerleaders in the following divisions:

• Ages 5 and 6: D Team

• Ages 7 and 8: C Team

• Ages 9 and 10: B Team

• Ages 11 and 12: A Team.

The Cougars are affiliated with the Mountain State Elite League. Other league teams are the Danville Panthers, South Hills Patriots, Elk River Huskies, Sissonville Redskins, Winfield Generals, St. Albans Li’l Dragons, Mineralwells Bobcats, Poca Dots, Ripley Vikings, Nitro Wildcats and Valley Rockets.

“Our home field for the 2017 season is Calvert Field in East Bank, home of the Pioneers,” League Vice President Jason Crowder said.

The team will have a pre-season pool party and cookout from 6 until 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, at Pioneer Park, 130 Brannon St. in East Bank. This will be the last day for player and cheerleader sign-ups and to order uniforms. RSVPs would be appreciated to gauge the turnout.

The Cougars will also host a punt, pass and kick competition in Marmet, at the MacCorkle Avenue ball field across from the George S. Buckley Community Center, on Saturday, July 22. The free competition is open to all youths, not only the Cougar players. “It’s for small kids up to high school age,” Crowder said.

Season practice will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 24 at the Campbells Creek practice field.

The tentative season schedule is as follows:
