Google economic impact report lauds metal building/electrical firm

Parkline Inc., a Putnam County metal building and electrical business, created a spark in Google’s 2016 Economic Impact Report.

The Eleanor business employs 110 West Virginians and was one of four West Virginia businesses to be featured in the report, which highlights businesses that use Google products.

Parkline specializes in “self-framing” metal buildings, without structural frames or beams for industrial and infrastructural customers, said Bill Estep, president and CEO of the company. The buildings are custom made and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

“Our buildings are perfect for housing equipment, because you don’t have any obstructions,” said Brian Sayre, manager of commercial operations. “They lend themselves very well in that market.”

Parkline can build modular buildings that are prefabricated and pre-integrated with equipment requested by customers, or “site build,” which makes delivery easier, especially in West Virginia, Estep said.

The company’s customers are in industries like electrical generation and distribution, transportation, gas and oil, chemical plants and water treatment plants. The business does not provide commercial or residential buildings.

The company was featured in the economic report because it uses Adwords, Google’s advertising tool to attract potential customers.

Parkline receives 30 percent of its leads from advertising with Google and was featured out of 700 West Virginia businesses, website publishers and nonprofits that use Google advertising tools, the report says.

“We’re on their radar as far as the spend that we have for our size,” Estep said. “My supposition would be that they look at company sizes and spending, we’re punching above our weight.”

The company provides metal buildings nationally and has also had customers in Mexico and Canada.

“We’ve employed people not only in Eleanor, but in the surrounding areas,” Sayre said. “I’ve been here 20 years and the number of employees we’ve had has grown.”

The business acquired Bebco Industries in 2016, adding 90, Texas-based employees to the company.

“When we acquired that business it wasn’t about getting out of West Virginia in any way, shape or form,” Estep said. “It was about being close to the customers for shipping costs and having access to some additional construction materials that expand the markets we can go after and really help the company grow.”

Despite the company’s growth, Estep said he had no plans to move from Eleanor.

“We have a great quality workforce here that’s really quite stable,” Estep said. “We’re in a wonderful geography, and we’ve been able to keep and attract the talent we need to operate our business well. As long as we can compete nationally, there would be no reason to incur the costs and pain of geographic location.”

Other West Virginia businesses featured in the report include Capon Springs and Farms, Mountaineer Brand and Spring Hill Pastry Inc.
